Choosing a SimplePractice alternative
For a private-pay practice, start with the work you need to do each week: schedule appointments, write notes, collect payments and give patients access to their documents. Then check what each EHR charges for that combination. A lower starting price may leave out something you use every day.
This guide covers CoralEHR, TherapyNotes, Jane, TheraPlatform, CounSol and Carepatron. CoralEHR publishes this comparison and is one of the products listed. Prices and features were checked against vendor documentation on September 8, 2026. This is a comparison of published information, not a hands-on ranking of all six products.

Why Therapists Are Looking for SimplePractice Alternatives
Your reason for switching should guide the shortlist. If the issue is cost, compare the same features and clinician count. If it is documentation, test a note you write regularly. If it is telehealth, try the session from both the clinician's and patient's side.
SimplePractice currently charges $49, $79 or $99 a month before add-ons. It offers both standalone Note Taker and the broader Care Aide suite, which includes treatment planning in beta. Several products in this guide offer AI notes, so compare the tasks each supports and the extra cost. Check plan restrictions carefully. SimplePractice Starter includes telehealth appointment reminders, while general reminders require Essential or Plus. Basic calendar sync on Essential and Plus supports Apple, Google and Microsoft 365; advanced personal-calendar sync is Google-only on Plus. These details can change whether switching is worth the effort. Plan comparison, calendar sync documentation
Six alternatives to consider
1. CoralEHR for private-pay practices
CoralEHR Starter is $29 a month and covers notes, scheduling, teletherapy, the patient portal and payments. Pro is $79 a month and adds the AI scribe, insurance billing and group tools. See the plan details for what is included.
CoralEHR does not handle claims submission, eligibility checks or ERA processing. If those are requirements, compare the insurance-capable products below. For private-pay work, use a demo to check the steps from an appointment to a signed note and payment, including how you prepare a superbill when a patient requests one.
You can read the direct SimplePractice comparison or book a 20-minute CoralEHR demo. Bring a fictional example of the workflow you want to see.
2. TherapyNotes for practices that also bill insurance
TherapyNotes lists Solo at $69 a month and Group at $79 for the first clinician plus $50 for each additional clinician. Nonclinical users are included. TherapyFuel AI is $40 per clinician per month, so a solo subscription with AI totals $109 before other charges.
Basic telehealth is included; premium telehealth is $15 per clinician. The published card rate is 3.1% + $0.30. Ask which insurance transactions and reminders incur usage charges when comparing a quote. If you expect to accept insurance later, test those workflows as well as the private-pay visit you handle today. TherapyNotes subscription guide
3. Jane for a multidisciplinary practice
Jane's US plans are Balance at $54, Practice at $79 and Thrive at $99 a month. Balance allows 20 appointments per month, so a practice seeing more patients should compare a higher tier. AI Scribe costs $15 per participating practitioner.
Jane lists treatment plans and outcome-measure surveys among its core features. Its online card rate is 2.85% + $0.25. Insurance billing costs extra, including separate clearinghouse charges. Use Jane's demo account to check the templates, schedules and permissions needed by each discipline in your practice. Jane US pricing
4. TheraPlatform for interactive telehealth
TheraPlatform's standard prices are $39 for Basic, $69 for Pro and $79 for Pro Plus. Its pricing page lists over 30 interactive apps and an AI Notes add-on at $30 per provider per month. Temporary discounts are separate from those standard prices.
If you use activities during sessions, ask which ones are included in the tier you are considering. Try an activity with two devices and check how you document the session afterward. That will tell you more about fit than the number of tools on a feature list. TheraPlatform pricing
5. CounSol for journals and personal support
CounSol lists a patient journal and a personal account manager. Its displayed promotional prices range from $49.95 for Standard to $69.95 for Premium Plus. The page marks these as a limited-time offer, so confirm your ongoing price before subscribing.
The tiers differ in their video and insurance features. Ask to see how journal sharing works and how a patient manages access to an entry. Also check the total cost with your chosen payment processor. CounSol pricing and features
6. Carepatron for starting with a free plan
Carepatron's free plan includes AI note-taking, telehealth and unlimited patients, with 1GB of storage. Paid plans are Plus at $39 per user per month and Advanced at $49. Annual billing reduces the monthly equivalent to $31 and $39 respectively.
These replace the older Essential, Plus and Advanced prices still found in some comparisons. Insurance billing requires a paid subscription. Before relying on the free plan, check your document storage needs and try the complete appointment, note and payment workflow. Carepatron subscription guide
Before you move records out of SimplePractice
A feature comparison is only part of the decision. Before cancelling an existing subscription, agree on the scope of the move:
- List the records you need. Separate patient details, signed notes, uploaded documents, future appointments and outstanding balances. Ask how each type will be handled.
- Confirm formats and responsibilities. Find out what you export, what the receiving vendor imports and what needs manual entry. Get any fees and timing in writing.
- Check a sample. Review dates, signatures, attachments and patient matching before committing to a full transfer. Retain access to your original export.
- Plan the changeover. Decide when scheduling and payments move, how patients receive new portal invitations and who checks that everything arrived.
